Mr Dadaji Khobragade, a farmer from Naghbid taluka of Chandipur in Maharashtra, invented HMT rice, a highly successful rice variety that yields 80% more rice than the standard type. He succeeded after five years of persistent research and study on a tiny farm he owned, with no backing from the scientific community, in selecting and breeding the HMT rice variety from the ordinary “Patel 3” rice variety. HMT rice is now farmed on over a million acres across five states in India.
