Levofloxacin is an antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone class. It is used to treat bacterial infections, including:
Respiratory tract infections (like pneumonia, bronchitis)
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Skin infections
Prostate infections
Certain types of gastrointestinal infections
It does not work for viral infections like the common cold or flu.
Usually taken once daily, with or without food.
Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew.
Take at the same time each day for best effect.
Finish the full course, even if you feel better, to prevent antibiotic resistance.
Most people tolerate Levofloxacin well, but side effects may occur:
Common (mild)
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea
Stomach pain
Headache
Dizziness
Serious (seek medical attention immediately)
Tendon pain, swelling, or rupture (especially in the Achilles tendon)
Severe diarrhea (possible Clostridium difficile infection)
Nerve problems (tingling, numbness)
Mood changes or hallucinations
Severe allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, trouble breathing)
Avoid excessive sunlight; may make skin sensitive.
Inform your doctor if you have kidney problems, heart rhythm issues, or a history of tendon problems.
Can interact with other medicines, like blood thinners, certain antacids, or diabetes medications.
