Algebra and Trigonometry | B.A./B.Sc. First Year Major-1 | NEP 2020 Syllabus of All Madhya Pradesh Universities | Indian Knowledge System, Solved Papers, MCQs & HOTS | Dr. H.K. Pathak

If you are a B.A. or B.Sc. First Year student in Madhya Pradesh, your Major-1 paper opens with a unit most textbooks on the shelf do not contain. Unit-I is the Indian Knowledge System - Bhaskaracharya II, Brahmagupta, Mahaviracharya, Narayana Pandit and Vedic Algebra. NEP books written for other states skip it, and students find out a fortnight too late. This book was written for the Madhya Pradesh syllabus, so it starts exactly where your paper starts.

From there it follows your six units in order: Rank, Echelon and Normal Form of a Matrix, Eigen Values and Eigen Vectors; Characteristic Equations, the Cayley-Hamilton Theorem and its application to inverses and systems of linear equations; Roots of an Equation, Synthetic Division and Descartes' Rule of Signs; De-Moivre's Theorem and extraction of roots of a complex quantity; and Circular, Hyperbolic and Inverse Hyperbolic Functions.

Every chapter carries solved examples building from first principles to exam standard, followed by Multiple Choice Questions, Objective Questions and Higher Order Thinking Skills problems. Previous year university papers are included with complete solutions, so you practise on the real paper rather than a guess at it.

These are not only first-year topics. Matrices, eigen values, Cayley-Hamilton, theory of equations and complex numbers appear again in MPPSC Mathematics, CSIR NET and UGC NET Mathematical Sciences, CUET-PG and IIT JAM. Learn them rigorously now and you revise later, not relearn.

Written by Dr. H.K. Pathak, Ex-Professor and Head of the School of Studies in Mathematics at Pt.
