Design Philosophy
At Oakliv, we've embraced the idea of "Circular Design," a functional design philosophy that allows all product components to return to nature without burdening the environment, and are either reused, recycled, or upcycled.
Our categories range from home interiors, eco-friendly multifunctional everyday use products, vegan accessories, and anything and everything made from natural cork and cork leather.
Production Process
Because we are founded on strong values of circularity and building a more sustainable value chain, we often work backward, letting material guide the process. We concentrate on eliminating waste, planning to maximize material qualities, and repurposing and recycling any production-related waste. Working with a material where waste does not exist, allows us to design freely and gives us the freedom to explore different geometries.
We use two forms of cork:
- Cork agglomerate- Made of granulated cork, derived from by-products that are a result of the manufacture of natural cork closures.
- Cork leather- Once the bark is removed from the tree, the cork is left dry out and then steamed and boiled. That’s what gives it extra elasticity. The blocks of cork are then sliced into thin sheets and a fabric support backing is attached. The end product is a durable textile that is a beautiful cruelty-free alternative to animal leather.

We accomplish our goal by employing the following environmentally sound strategies:
- Raw Material- Oaklive enhances the natural characteristics of a raw material that is sustainable by nature. The cork is permanently removed from the trunk every nine years and does not harm the tree in any way. After harvesting a new layer of cork begins to form.
- Production Process- Waste offers countless opportunities. Cork, which is not used in stoppers, is granulated which gives rise to many other applications. We use these to create an interior, architecture, and countless everyday items.
- Circular Economy: The cork industry as a whole reflects the concept of a circular economy and lifestyle that aligns with our vision in which nothing is lost and everything is transformed.
- Packaging- We are all aware of the problems with packaging: plastic, single-use, and overuse! Orders are supplied using a combination of recycled cardboard and paper packaging that can be reused or recycled whenever possible. Though we are not 100% plastic-free just yet, we only use it if no other option is available.
