How Ayurveda is helpful to improve vision and nourish the eyes

25 Apr 2026

Vision is one of the most important senses in human life. Our eyes allow us to understand the world, perform daily activities, connect with others, and appreciate our surroundings. Good eyesight supports both independence and mental well-being. However, factors such as aging, excessive screen time, pollution, and poor lifestyle habits can gradually weaken vision.

Ayurvedic stances on vision improvement

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, offers a natural and holistic approach to maintaining and improving eye health. According to Ayurvedic principles, the eyes are closely connected to the balance of the body’s three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Imbalances in these doshas can affect vision, so treatments focus on restoring balance, improving blood circulation, and strengthening the nerves that support eye function.

Ayurvedic methods for vision care include both internal and external practices. Internally, herbal formulations and a balanced diet are recommended to nourish the eyes and enhance their function. Externally, therapies such as gentle eye cleansing, massage, and specific eye exercises help reduce strain and improve overall eye health.

One of the most well-known Ayurvedic remedies is Triphala, a combination of three powerful herbs. It is traditionally consumed with honey and ghee to support and improve eyesight. Ayurveda also suggests certain external applications and therapies to strengthen the eyes.

A widely practiced therapy is Netra Tarpana, in which medicated ghee is applied to the eyes and retained for a specific period. This treatment is believed to nourish eye tissues, reduce dryness, and provide relief from strain—especially for individuals who spend long hours on screens or reading.

Ayurveda emphasizes a holistic approach, focusing not only on the eyes but on overall body health. Through proper diet, herbal support, lifestyle adjustments, and therapies, it aims to address the root causes of vision problems rather than just the symptoms.

However, it is important to ensure that any Ayurvedic treatment or therapy is performed under the guidance of trained and qualified practitioners to ensure safety and effectiveness.
